Located at the most northerly point of Western Australia’s Coral Coast, sits Exmouth. We spent three months living and exploring this magical part of Australia and have completely fallen in love. Whether you want to surf, snorkel, fish, hike or swim, Exmouth has it all. I’ve gathered a list of some of the best places to visit in Exmouth for your trip!
Turquoise Bay
This has been by far my favourite place to return to. The perfect beach to spend the day, floating in the shallows and snorkelling in the reef that sits just meters off the shore. Park at the drift loop car park and mame your way to the southern end of the beach and let the current drift you up the shoreline as you snorkel! I’d recommend spending an entire day here so you can experience Turquoise Bay at both low and high tide, each equally as magic.
Graveyards
Watching sunset at this amazing location became a ritual throughout our time in Exmouth. There’s nothing quite like the afternoon glow of the sun against the ripple of the sand dunes.
Graveyards hasn’t been marked on google maps, although if you follow the main road heading north from Yardie Homestead, you’ll find Graveyards on the third exit to the left.
TIP* These little dirt tracks that scatter along the coastline are definitely worth checking out, we found some epic places to watch the sunset and catch a few squid. (You’d be surprised what you can stumble upon just by heading off the beaten track).
Lakeside
Lakeside is also another hotspot for snorkelling, a place where the reef starts only meters off the shore. Not having spent too much time snorkelling before, this was an amazing place to gain our confidence. The prime snorkelling spot is about a 10 minute walk south from the car park.
TIP* We found that mid morning to around 3pm was the perfect time to go for a snorkel (this was when the sun was highest in the sky and so the water was the clearest). And be sure to check tide times as high tide is usually better for snorkelling here!
Mandu Mandu Gorge Trail
Located in the Cape Range National Park and a 50 minute drive from the town of Exmouth, the Mandu Mandu Trail starts off in the deep walls of the gorge and takes you up the edge of a cliff, to a spot with the most spectacular views of the ocean and the gorge below. It took us about an hour an a half (keeping in mind that we really took in our surroundings and had a pretty slow pace). If you look close enough, you can often find a rock wallaby perched up on the cliff walls.
TIP* The top of the gorge is the perfect place to watch the sun go down over the ocean. So if you time your walk perfectly, this could be the ideal way to finish off your day.
Charles Knife Canyon
We woke up early to visit this spot and it definitely didn’t disappoint. About a 25 minute drive south of the town of Exmouth, the road in takes you up along the winding ridge, offering the most insane views of Cape Range and the Gulf. We sat looking out to the gulf as the sun rose with not another soul in sight. Watching the sunrise here is definitely a magical experience that I would highly recommend. These landscapes are definitely something special to experience for yourself.
TIP* Follow the road on the ridge until you reach where the bitumen ends and drive about 100m on the gravel road. We found this is where we got the best views of the canyon!
Wobiri and Jansz Beach Access
These two places became our local whilst in Exmouth. This one long stretch of beach was the perfect place to spend the whole day perched up under an umbrella, and going for a nice swim in the aqua waters. If you take the road in at Wobiri access, the beach there is great for beginner surfers wanting to catch some fun little waves!
TIP* There’s often great waves at at a low tide.
Osprey Bay
About 30 minutes into Cape Range National Park, sits Osprey Bay. This beautiful part of the coastline is scattered with small beautiful rocky cliffs right alongside the waters edge. Osprey Bay offers camping which is only meters from the beach and is also an amazing spot for a snorkel. It can get quite busy at Osprey due to the campground being quite close and the beach being a little small. It is quite a hotspot for people to check out so make sure you visit in the early morning if you want it to yourself! Otherwise you can always walk up the coastline and snag a spot to have for yourself.
